One-Night-Only Cabaret Show Comes to Oak Cliff

If youre looking for something a little bolder than your typical night out in Dallas, this might be it.

The Turtle Creek Chorale is kicking off its 46th season with a one-night-only performance that leans fully into the unexpected. Songs We Cant Sing on Stage arrives Saturday, May 2, offering an adults-only cabaret-style evening that trades formality for fun, edge, and a healthy dose of irreverence.

Hosted by the always-unforgettable Helen Holy, with special guest Denise Lee, this show pulls back the curtain on the kinds of songs that dont typically make it into a traditional chorale program. Think crowd favorites, hidden gems, and performances that are a little cheeky, a little provocative, and completely entertaining.

This is a chance to see Chorale members in a different light, stepping outside the structure of a formal concert and into something more intimate and expressive. Its also a nod to the groups roots, bringing cabaret back to the stage for the first time in more than a decade.

A quick note before you go: this is strictly an adults-only event, with explicit language, partial nudity, and plenty of playful innuendo throughout.

Breakthrough T1D Fort Worth Gala Raises $925,000 at A Night of Hope

The Fort Worth community came together on Saturday, April 18, at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel for the 2026 Breakthrough T1D Gala, A Night of Hope, raising $925,000 to accelerate life-changing research for type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Chaired by Dabney and Kelly Poorter, the event welcomed more than 400 supporters, community leaders, and families impacted by T1D for a powerful program that blended personal storytelling with philanthropy. My brother was diagnosed at the age of 6, and I began experiencing the same symptoms at the age of 26 while caring for my 7-month-old, said Dabney Poorter. This experience deepened my appreciation for Breakthrough T1D and its life-changing work in early detection, prevention, and treatment.

CBS Texas anchor Karen Borta served as emcee, sharing her familys personal connection to T1D, while auctioneer Wes Poole energized the room throughout the evenings live auction.

Throughout the evening, Breakthrough T1Ds Youth Ambassadors children living with type 1 diabetes and their siblings greeted guests as they helped drive donations. Their enthusiasm not only supported the nights fundraising success, but it also served as a reminder of the lives directly impacted by every dollar raised.

The program featured heartfelt remarks from Fort Worth board president David Muckleroy and Breakthrough T1D leaders Amy Camp, territory executive director, and Kristen Pool, Fort Worth chapter director, who highlighted the momentum in research and the tangible progress being made toward improved treatments and cures. We must continue to fund the research until we can turn type 1 into type none, concluded Amy Camp.

A highlight of the evening came from the Honoree Family Gloria Moncrief, Erich Holmsten, and Monty Holmsten who shared their personal journey with T1D. With no prior family history, Monty was diagnosed at age 11 after experiencing extreme thirst. Her diabetic alert dog, Holly, stole the show as she stood proudly beside Monty on stage while Monty shared a heartfelt letter she had prepared as an application to a new school a powerful reminder of the daily realities of living with type 1 diabetes and the importance of continued support.

Guests also heard from the Fund A Cure Family, the Shuman family Brooke and Kris Shuman along with their son Tyler whose story underscored the impact of early screening and advancements like teplizumab, which can delay the onset of T1D. Kris was diagnosed at age 24, and when the family decided to test their children, they discovered their 12-year-old, Tyler, had antibodies linked to T1D. Their experience illustrated how donor support is directly changing lives and creating new possibilities for families.

Lexie Peterson, community relations & corporate giving coordinator at American Airlines, also known in the diabetes community as The Divabetic a prominent T1D advocate, content creator, and influencer kicked off the live auction experience, with American Airlines contributing miles to enhance packages and drive fundraising momentum. She encouraged the crowd to let good take flight!

The evening featured an exciting silent auction, chaired by Adelaide and Charlie Royer, and a high-energy live auction, chaired by Kate and Sonny Dykes, which offered one-of-a-kind experiences ranging from luxury travel and exclusive entertainment packages to private dining experiences. The live auction was followed by a Fund A Cure paddle raise, where 100 percent of donations go directly to research.

A highlight of the auction featured a one-of-a-kind canvas created by Breakthrough T1D Youth Ambassadors. In a powerful moment, 30 Youth Ambassadors gathered at the front of the stage alongside the artwork created using their individual fingerprints to form a beta cell, the insulin-producing cell destroyed in type 1 diabetes.

The Bone Farm by Dean Koontz is a prequel, of sorts, to his exciting Jane Hawk series and tells of a deadly encounter with a serial killer known as the Mother Hater. Ably narrated by Elizabeth Rodgers and James Anderson Foster, the story unfolds from alternating viewpoints: Janes and the killers. Readers are privy to the killers knowledge and Janes realization of the truth. The story is gritty and violent, and the resolution is suspenseful and action-packed. Readers/listeners do not need to have read the regular series books first to enjoy this novella.

I recommend THE BONE FARM to fans of the Jane Hawk series or those want an introduction or sample of Koontzs wonderful storytelling.

Legacy West is officially planting its flag as a North Texas destination for soccer fans. Today, the premier lifestyle district announced a series of high-energy activations, including the grand opening of a flagship adidas store and a new installation at Legacy West to celebrate the destinations footie fever heading into the summer.

Adidas Grand Opening

The soccer excitement kicks off with the highly anticipated arrival of the new adidas store at Legacy West. On June 4, the store officially opens its doors, bringing to Plano the classic street style for which Adidas is known.

Spanning more than 3,200 square feet, the shop will follow the adidas originals format, which focuses on creativity, culture and self-expression. Yesterdays Echo by Matt Coyle is the 2014 Anthony Award winner for Best First Novel and the first book in the authors Rick Cahill crime fiction series. The main character (Cahill), a disgraced former Santa Barbara police officer, had relocated to the town he grew up in after being accused, but never charged due to lack of any evidence, of the murder of his wife, Colleen. For the past eight years, hes struggled to put a life together as the manager and part-owner of Muldoons Steakhouse in the La Jolla community of San Diego. However, a couple of good deeds at the restaurant one night put him in the crosshairs of some very powerful people involved in politics, blackmail, and murder.

Rick is a personable guy dealing with a tragic past that began in his childhood. Hes carrying a load of guilt since his wifes murder, and although innocent of her murder, he feels responsible for her death. His father had been fired from the La Jolla Police Department when Rick was a boy and lived under a cloud for the rest of his life, though it appears he, too, was blamed for someone elses actions. Both father and son were judged guilty in the public eye, and there is much yet to be uncovered in both cases in future novels.

I enjoyed Ricks quick wit and wisecracking style, and the novel has a strong crime noir feel.

The plot is complex, with several subplots unfolding throughout, some of which eventually converge in unexpected ways. The story is violent at times, and theres shocking collateral damage that affects Ricks loved ones. Scenes with Colleens father, who is convinced Rick is guilty of his daughters murder, are gut-wrenching, especially as you feel Rick is being truthful that he was not the one.

I recommend YESTERDAYS ECHO to readers of crime fiction.

The story within a story reveals Lafittes life as an exciting tale of pirates, privateers, love, betrayal, and loyalty to the new nation of the United States. While the journal claims to want to set the record straight on Lafittes life, its written by a pirate, and it repeatedly warns not to believe anything a pirate says. As Tobias starts his journey back into life, there is the lure of pirates gold in the journals pages, but the real treasure is Tobiass rescue and return to his family.

Artist, Lover, Forger, Thief is the first book in author Sheila Sharpes Kate ODade Art Crime series, in which an elusive conman and painting forger puts in motion a devious plan for revenge against the murderer who killed his family. With its clever, complex plot and morally gray main characters, I was quickly drawn into this intricate tale set in the world of art collectors and famous paintings.

Kate ODade is a therapist with many clients from the local artistic community, and she is a painter herself. But after her husband dies, leaving her in debt, she recalls how one of her clients had made a fortune selling copies and forgeries of the works of well-known artists. She starts to consider that maybe financial relief might reside in her own two talented hands. But when a valuable painting is left on her doorstep, shes drawn back into contact with her former patient, who is now a legitimate preservation and restoration specialist and the director of a wealthy art collectors private museum, or so it seems.

Nick McCoy is a talented painter in his own right, but the FBI and Scotland Yard are on his trail for forgery and theft. Hes guilty, of course, but a lack of evidence has kept him operating in the open in trusted positions at museums in both England and the U.S. When he comes face to face with his former therapist, he discovers he is still as attracted to her as he was when he was undergoing treatment. While Kate helped him resolve to leave forgery behind, his plans for revenge against the man who is now his employer are about to come to fruition.

Such a clever tale, beginning with some messy love triangles and a conman you can never really trust. All the main characters are flawed individuals, morally gray, and desperate in their own ways. Adding to the suspense is the arrival of a top-notch international team of art investigators, led by a detective chief inspector from London who has been chasing Nick for more than a decade. The evil bad guys, Dixon Steele and his depraved son, Simon, are truly awful people, and both are such loose cannons that I never knew what they were going to do next. I was committed to the story, hoping Nick would pull off whatever he had in store for these two. The storys ending nicely sets up future books in the series.

I recommend ARTIST, LOVER, FORGER, THIEF to readers of crime fiction, especially those interested in the art world and long cons.

Tiffany Mann is one of New York Citys premier Broadway talents, hailed as a powerhouse performer with a commanding presence that electrifies every stage she touches. Her musical foundation was rooted in the church, later refined through formal training with the renowned Texas Girls Choir under founder Shirley Carter. She continued her artistic development at the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts and toured extensively with the Singing Girls of Texas. After studying vocal performance and opera at Oklahoma City University, Tiffany transitioned seamlessly into professional theater, building her early career with standout performances across DFW before making her way to New York City. Now a sought-after theatrical force, Tiffany is celebrated for her work in Jellys Last Jam and Ragtime at New York City Center Encores!, and the Off-Broadway premiere of Oh Happy Day! at The Public Theater. Texas Womans University Hosts Free BALANCE Docuseries Screenings and Panels

A new docuseries produced by a North Texas researcher and Texas Womans University alumna is helping bring long-overdue visibility to perimenopausean experience that affects every woman, yet historically receives limited attention in research, education and public conversation.

Texas Womans will host a series of free public screenings of BALANCE: A Perimenopause Journey across its campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston this spring, each followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring experts in womens health. View the BALANCE trailer.

Monks dont typically come to mind when talking about menopause. But in BALANCE, filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhutimillennial Jain monks based in North Texasset out to better understand their own experiences with perimenopause, thus launching a journey that uncovers a broader story about the origins of menopause misinformation, gaps in womens midlife care, and the need for more open, informed conversations.

Produced by researcher, advocate and TWU alumna Stephanie Collins, the four-part docuseries blends personal storytelling with expert insight, exploring symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and fatigue, while examining the historical and cultural factors that have shaped how menopause is understood and treated. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and has drawn national attention and support from high-profile health care experts and Alyssa Milano, who serves as an executive producer.

A highlight of each TWU event will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Collins, which will offer an intriguing opportunity for a post-viewing conversation and extended dialogue about womens health. Joining the conversation will be Dr. Sarah Berg, a nationally-noted obstetrician-gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who specializes in midlife womens health and advances menopause education through speaking, writing and digital learning initiatives, including Selfority, a menopause information platform.

Menopause is something every woman will experience, yet for centuries its been pushed into the shadows, Collins said. Im proud to be part of the growing dialogue bringing this issue into the light and the effort to help women better understand their options. As a TWU alumna, its especially meaningful to bring BALANCE to my own universityan institution committed to the idea that when you educate a woman, you empower the world. That belief is at the heart of this project, which is about giving women the knowledge they need to take control of their menopause journey.

Jaime Porter, TWUs interim vice president for university advancement, said the screenings reflect TWUs commitment to advancing conversations that impact health care, as well as the universitys continued investment in womens health research.

Texas Womans is currently exploring a proposal to expand its Institute for Womens Health, with a focus on advancing research related to perimenopause and midlife health. The planning effort, led by a team that included Collins and supported by a grant from the Texas Womens Foundation, would further position TWU as a leader in addressing critical gaps in womens health.

Were excited that Texas Womans is taking part in this growing conversation, and delighted by the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of our alumnae, Porter said. Almost 90 percent of our students are women and nearly half of our students pursue careers in health care, so this is an issue that directly connects to our mission. These events offer a valuable opportunity for our community to engage with the topic and participate in thoughtful panel discussions with experts in the field.

Babs Norman, the principal in B. Norman Investigations, and her partner, Guy Brandt, are summoned by the head of the studio, Jack Warner himself, to discreetly find the murderer, while maintaining radio silence with the press. Babs chafes under Warner's hands-on involvement in the case, as Guy is assigned the plum task of investigating on the studio grounds while she is relegated to researching the victim's background. Meanwhile, she is desperately worried about her roommate, Aoi Otake, as the government proceeds with plans to send all residents of Japanese heritage to internment camps.
